A Time to Laugh

by Gateway Church - April 10, 2006

There is hope for the future because God has a sense of humor and we are funny to God.” –Bill Cosby

brianapprille2_1.jpgI don’t know about you, but I absolutely love to laugh. The problem is, very rarely do I really laugh…you know, genuinely laugh. By a genuine laugh, I mean a real, unforced, unpredicted burst of laughter. It’s the kind of laughter that makes your face sore because you can’t stop smiling and your stomach ache as though you’ve just done 100 sit-ups.

When I laugh genuinely, I look like a fool. I know this because I once had a home video of myself laughing very, very hard—I destroyed it. Isn’t it great to be in such hysterics that you lose control and just let go? Maybe you snort. Or maybe you are the type whose whole body starts to shake. Maybe, like me, you are one who makes such a high pitched noise, that by the time the laughter finally reaches its climax, you are not making any audible sound at all, except the continual slapping of your hand to your knee.

Whoever you may be, I would assume you enjoy a good laugh every now and then. If you are overdue for yours, please join us for Gateway’s Comedy Nite (Friday, April 28th @ 7:00pm). Not only will you be supporting our High School Mission trip to Texas ($10 at-the-door donation), you will have many ripe opportunities to laugh like you haven’t laughed in a long time.

We’ve got some very funny people in the church who have been spending the last several months putting together only their finest bits of stand-up comedy. There will also be a time to sit back and ask “Whose Line is it Anyway?” with our own talented improv group.  If you think you know some stupid people, just wait for our Stupid Human Tricks segment. As an audience member, you will also have the chance to get in on the action by performing your own stupid human trick or deliver your best (clean) joke. A great prize could be yours for the winning.

brian_apprille1.jpgBut wait, there’s more! Professional touring comedian Brian Apprille (pictured right and above) will be headlining the evening with an unforgettable set of stand-up. Described as "Brilliantly Entertaining!", "Coast To Coast Funny!", and "A Spectacular Exhibition Of High Energy Comedy!”, Brian has long left audiences “trying to catch their breath as he launches non-stop comedy rockets with a ‘pedal to the metal’ pace.”

"Brian brings a fun, high-energy, positive attitude to the stage. His views on pop culture, relationships, television, family, sports, and everything else under the sun make Brian a hit with audiences of all ages. Be sure to catch his very unique act!"-Boston Globe

Of course, if a laugh-out-loud veteran comedian doesn’t make it all worth while—maybe dessert will help. I hope so, ‘cause we’ll have plenty of it with your name on it (well, not literally, there’s no way we could know everyone’s name who reads this article and then magically get it onto each individual dessert…but I digress.)

Anyway, we would love to have you come and laugh with us. Bring family, friends, and your neighbors down the street who moved in a year ago but you’ve never actually met. We hope to see you there!
